The saved video has no sound
Check your device first, then the original post. Here is how to tell which one it is.
Last updated: October 29, 2026
The file plays but is silent.
Quick fix
- 1
Turn the volume up and check silent mode.
- 2
Open the file in another player, such as VLC.
- 3
Play the original post and see if it has sound.
Common causes
A muted device or player
Silent mode, a muted player or the wrong output can make a good file seem silent.
A post with no sound
Some posts were uploaded without any audio, so there is none to save.
Music removed by the platform
A music claim or an ended licence can mute a video after it was posted.
A player that cannot read the audio
A few built-in players cannot play some audio types, though other players can.
Step by step on your device
- 1
Flip the side switch so the bell is not crossed out.
- 2
Turn up the volume with the buttons.
- 3
Open the file in the Files app with Quick Look.
The details
Rule out your device
Silent files are often a volume problem, not a file problem.
- Turn the volume up and take the phone off silent mode.
- Check that the player is not muted. Many players remember a muted state.
- Open the file in a different player, such as VLC.
- Try headphones or another speaker.
Check the original post
Play the post in the app. If it is silent there too, the creator posted it without sound, or the platform muted it, for example because of a music claim. We save what the platform serves, so a silent original gives a silent file.
Music and claims
Some platforms mute or remove sound when a track is claimed or its licence ends. If a reel showed music yesterday and is silent today, that is the likely reason. There is nothing a downloader can add back.
Still no sound?
Send us the link on the contact page and tell us whether the original plays with sound, so we can check how that post is built.
How to avoid it next time
- Play the original post before you save it.
- Save videos soon after they are posted.
- Keep a second player such as VLC installed.
Questions people ask
Can the tool add the sound back?
No. We save what the platform serves. If the original is silent, so is the file.
The reel had music yesterday. Why not today?
The platform may have muted it because of a music claim. We cannot add it back.
Can I add new sound to a silent video?
Yes. The Add Audio to Video tool puts a new track on it.
