Social media video size and length guide

The sizes, ratios and limits people look up most, in one table, with plain advice on what to choose.

Each platform shows video a little differently. Knowing the usual size and ratio helps you upload without ugly crops, and it explains why a saved file has the dimensions it has. The numbers below are common recommendations and they change, so check the platform's own help page before something important.

How to read this table

Size is width by height. A vertical video is 1080 wide and 1920 tall, which is a 9:16 ratio. A square video is 1080 by 1080, a 1:1 ratio. A classic widescreen video is 1920 by 1080, a 16:9 ratio. If your video has a different ratio from the one a platform wants, it is cropped or shown with bars, so shoot for the ratio you will publish in.

Choosing a size for your own videos

For anything people watch on a phone, shoot vertical at 1080 by 1920. For video that will be watched on a laptop or a television, use 16:9. Square works well in feeds when you do not know where the video will be shown. Keep text away from the edges, because interface buttons and captions cover them on phones.

What this means for saved videos

A saved file keeps the size the platform served. A reel is usually 1080 by 1920 or 720 by 1280, a feed video can be square or portrait, and a LinkedIn or Vimeo clip is often 16:9. Our quality guide explains what the numbers mean, and the size calculator estimates how much space a clip will take.

Questions

What is the best size for a vertical video?

1080 pixels wide by 1920 tall, a 9:16 ratio. It fills a phone screen on Instagram Reels, TikTok, Stories, Snapchat Spotlight and Pinterest video pins.

Why do platforms change my video size?

They re-encode every upload to a few standard versions so it plays on slow and fast connections. That is why a saved video can be smaller than the one you uploaded.

Do these numbers change?

Yes. Limits and recommendations move over time. Treat this page as a practical guide and check the platform's own help page before an important upload.

How big is a one minute video?

Roughly 4 to 8 MB at 720p and 8 to 15 MB at 1080p for typical phone video. Use the size calculator for your own numbers.
