Video file size calculator
Work out how much space a video needs, or how much video fits in the space you have.
How long a video fits in a given space
Real files vary. A busy scene needs more data than a still one, so treat the result as a good estimate, not an exact number.
How the estimate works
A video file is mostly its bitrate multiplied by its length. Bitrate is how much data is used each second, measured in megabits per second. Multiply it by the seconds, divide by 8 to turn megabits into megabytes, and you have the size. This calculator uses typical bitrates for phone video with sound: about 4 Mbit/s for 720p, 8 for 1080p and 35 for 4K.
Typical sizes per minute
| Quality | Bitrate | One minute | Ten minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7 Mbit/s | 5 MB | 0.05 GB |
| 480p | 1.5 Mbit/s | 11 MB | 0.11 GB |
| 720p | 4 Mbit/s | 30 MB | 0.29 GB |
| 1080p | 8 Mbit/s | 60 MB | 0.59 GB |
| 1440p | 16 Mbit/s | 120 MB | 1.17 GB |
| 4K | 35 Mbit/s | 263 MB | 2.56 GB |
Tips for saving space
Pick 720p for videos you only watch on a phone, since the difference from 1080p is small on a small screen. Save the large files on Wi-Fi. Move finished videos to cloud storage and delete the local copy. Our video size guide shows the usual sizes on each platform, and the quality guide explains resolutions in plain words.
