That story couldn't be fetched

Stories expire after a day and need a story share link. Here is how to get a link that works.

Last updated: October 29, 2026

What you see

A story link fails, or only the profile shows.

Quick fix

  1. 1

Open the story while it is still live.

  2. 2

Tap Share or the three dots, then Copy link.

  3. 3

Paste the whole link on the Stories page.

Common causes

A profile link

A link like instagram.com/name has no single story behind it. You need the story link with a long number.

A story older than 24 hours

Stories disappear after a day. After that the link stops working.

A private account

Stories from private accounts are only visible to approved followers.

A Highlight or close friends story

These need a signed-in session, so a public tool cannot read them.

Step by step on your device

  1. 1

Open the story in the Instagram app.

  2. 2

    Tap the paper-plane Share icon.

  3. 3

    Choose Copy link.

  4. 4

Paste it on the Stories page in Safari.

The details

What it means

Either the link is not a story link, the story is older than 24 hours, or the account is not public. Stories are the hardest posts to save, because they are temporary and often limited to followers.

Get a link that works

A story link looks like instagram.com/stories/username/ followed by a long number.

  1. Open the story while it is still live.
  2. Tap Share or the three dots and choose Copy link.
  3. Paste the whole link into the Stories page.
  4. Do not use the profile link, because it points to no single story.

What is not supported

Highlights, close-friends stories and stories from private accounts need a signed-in session, so they cannot be saved. A story older than a day has expired and its link stops working.

Anonymous by design

We never log in to an account, so the poster has no record of a view from us. That also means we cannot see anything that needs a login.

How to avoid it next time

Questions people ask

Can I save stories anonymously?

Yes. We never log in, so the poster has no record of a view from us.

Why can I not save Highlights?

Highlights need a signed-in session, which we do not use.

Can I save several stories at once?

One at a time. Paste the link of each story separately.

Ready to try again?

Follow the quick fix above, then paste your link once more.
