The saved file will not play
Almost always a player or a partial download problem. Two quick checks solve it.
Last updated: October 29, 2026
The player says the file is damaged or unsupported.
Quick fix
- 1
Check that the download finished.
- 2
Open the file in VLC or another player.
- 3
Check that the name ends in .mp4, .jpg, .mp3 or .m4a.
Common causes
A partial download
If the connection dropped, the file is cut short. It may be only a few kilobytes.
A picky built-in player
Some default players do not support every video or audio type.
A web page saved by mistake
A file named .html or .txt is a page, not the media.
A cloud-only file
A file kept in a cloud folder can look broken until it is fully on the device.
Step by step on your device
- 1
Open the Files app and find the download.
- 2
Tap it to open it in Quick Look.
- 3
If it does not play, save it again from Safari.
The details
Make sure the download finished
If the connection dropped, the file can be cut short. A video of only a few kilobytes, or one that stops at once, is a partial download. Delete it and save it again on a steady connection.
Try another player
Videos are standard MP4 files, but some built-in players are picky. VLC plays almost everything on Windows, Mac and Android. On iPhone, open the file from the Files app with Quick Look. Audio files are MP3 or M4A, which any music app can play.
Check the extension
The name should end in .mp4, .jpg, .mp3 or .m4a. If your browser added .html or .txt, you saved a web page and not the media. Reload the page and press Download again.
Move the file
A file saved in a cloud-only folder can look broken until it is fully downloaded to the device. Copy it to a local folder and open it from there.
How to avoid it next time
- Save large files on Wi-Fi.
- Do not close the page until the download finishes.
- Keep VLC installed for odd files.
Questions people ask
The file size is tiny. Why?
That is a partial download. Delete it and save it again on a steady connection.
Why does it play on my phone but not my computer?
Some computer players lack a codec. VLC plays almost everything.
Will converting help?
Sometimes. The Video Converter on this site can turn it into a standard MP4.
