I downloaded the file but cannot find it

Browsers save to a downloads folder, not to the photo gallery. Here is where to look on each device.

What you see

The download finished, but nothing is in the gallery.

Open your browser's downloads list.

On iPhone, use Share, then Save Video to put it in Photos.

On Android, look in Files, then Downloads.

Common causes

Browsers do not save to the gallery

A website cannot write straight into your photo library. Files go to a Downloads folder first.

A different browser than you expect

The file went to the browser you used, so check that browser's list.

A name you did not recognise

Downloaded files often carry a code in their name instead of the title of the video.

Step by step on your device

Tap the Downloads icon in the Safari address bar, or open the Files app and choose Downloads.

Tap the file to open it.

Tap Share, then Save Video or Save Image.

It now appears in Photos, in Recents.

Why it is not in your gallery

Websites cannot write straight to your photo library. The file goes to a Downloads folder, and you move it from there if you want it with your photos.

iPhone and iPad

Open the Downloads icon in Safari's address bar, or open the Files app and choose Downloads.

Tap the file to open it.
Tap Share.
Choose Save Video, or Save Image for a picture.
It now appears in Photos, in Recents.

Android

Tap the download notification, or open the Files app and choose Downloads. Gallery and Google Photos usually list a Downloads album after a minute. To add the file to your main gallery, move it into the Pictures, Movies or DCIM folder.

Windows and Mac

Press Ctrl and J in Chrome or Edge to open the downloads list, then choose Show in folder. On a Mac, click the download arrow in the Safari toolbar or open Downloads from the Dock.

Tip

Rename the file as soon as you find it. Downloaded files usually carry a code, and a clear name saves a lot of searching later.

Why is it in Files and not Photos?

Photos is only filled when you choose Save Video. Until then the file lives in Files.
