Reels, stories and posts: what is the difference?
Instagram has several kinds of content, and they behave very differently. A post stays on a profile until the owner removes it. A story disappears after a day. A reel is a short vertical video that can be pushed to people who do not follow you. Each has its own link, its own shape and its own limits, which affect whether and how you can save it. This guide explains the differences in plain words, so you can pick the right option when you want to keep something.

Posts
A post is a photo, a video or a carousel of several items that sits on a profile grid. It stays until the owner deletes or archives it. Posts can be square, portrait or landscape, and a carousel can hold up to twenty items. The link of a post has /p/ and a short code. Because posts last, they are the easiest kind of content to save.
Reels
A reel is a short vertical video, usually 1080 by 1920, with music, effects and captions. Reels are shown in a feed to people who do not follow the account, so they travel far. The link has /reel/. They stay on a profile like posts, though an owner can remove them at any time.
Stories
A story is a photo or a short video that disappears from the account after 24 hours. Stories are vertical and often carry stickers, music and links. The link has /stories/, the account name and a long number. Many stories are visible only to followers or to a small group, and highlights keep selected stories on a profile.
What this means for saving
Posts and reels from public accounts can be saved from their links at any time while they exist. Stories are time limited, so you must save a public story within a day. Highlights and close-friends stories need a signed-in session, so a public tool cannot save them. Private accounts cannot be saved in any form.
That is why our site has separate pages for videos, reels, photos and stories. Each takes the kind of link that fits its content.
Quality differences
Reels and stories are mostly 1080 by 1920 or 720 by 1280. Feed videos can be 1080 by 1350 for portrait or 1080 by 1080 for square. Photos are shown at about 1080 pixels on the long side. Quality depends on what was uploaded, not on the type.
Choosing the right page
Use the Reels page for links with /reel/, the Video page for links with /p/, the Photo page for pictures and carousels, and the Stories page for story links. If you are unsure, paste the link on the video downloader page. It reads the link and opens the right tool for you.
Questions people ask
Can I see who watched my story? Yes, in the app, but a public downloader does not log in, so it leaves no viewer name.
Do reels last forever? They stay until the owner deletes or archives them, like posts.
Why is a story link different from a post link? A story link carries the account name and a long number, because stories are temporary and tied to a time.
Which page should I use for a carousel? The Photo page lists every picture and clip in a carousel with its own button.
