How to download audio from an Instagram reel

Sometimes the best part of a reel is its sound: a song you want to find, a voice-over you want to study, or an ambient recording you want to keep. This guide explains how to save the audio from a public reel, what happens when the platform stores the sound inside the video, and how to extract it yourself with free software. It also covers formats such as MP3 and M4A, the quality you can expect, how to find a song name from a reel, and the copyright rules about music that every listener should know before sharing anything.

Where a reel's sound lives

A reel is a video file with its sound inside. In many cases the platform also stores audio as a separate stream, which allows quick playback. Whether a standalone track is exposed to the public depends on the post. Where it is, the Audio page of this site can offer it as a file. Where it is not, the sound is only available inside the video.

Either way, the sound you hear in the app is the sound you get, with nothing added or removed by us.

Step 1: copy the reel link

Open the reel, tap the paper-plane Share icon and choose Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from the browser bar. The link looks like instagram.com/reel/ followed by a code. The reel must belong to a public account, so test it in a private browser window if you are unsure.

Step 2: paste it into the Audio page

Paste the link and let the tool run. If the platform offers a standalone track for that reel, you see an audio card with a player and a Download button. If it does not, the page tells you that no separate track was found, and you can use the video route below.

You can preview the audio before you save, which saves time when you are looking for a specific sound.

If there is no separate track

Save the reel as an MP4 from the Reels page. Then extract the sound with free software. VLC media player can convert a video to audio from its Convert menu, and Audacity can open the video file and export MP3 or WAV. On a phone, many free editors let you pull the audio from a video into a separate file.

This gives you the final mix of the reel, including any voice and music together. It cannot separate a song from a voice, since they are mixed into one track.

Formats and quality

Audio comes as MP3 or M4A. MP3 plays everywhere. M4A usually sounds a little better at the same size and works well on Apple and Android devices. Neither is converted by us, so you get the format the platform uses.

A minute of audio is only about 1 to 2 MB, so it is quick to save even on mobile data. The quality is the same as the sound in the app, which is typically good but compressed.

Finding a song from a reel

Many reels show the name of the sound at the bottom, with the artist. Tap it to see the original audio page and other reels that use it. If there is no name, play the saved audio near a song recognition app on your phone, which can often name the track within seconds.

Music, copyright and fair use

Music belongs to artists, composers and labels. Listening to a saved clip privately is low risk. Posting it in your own videos, using it in an advert, selling it or sharing it widely is not allowed without a licence, and platforms may mute, remove or claim such content. If you want music for your own projects, use royalty-free libraries or buy a licence.

Voice-overs and recordings of people also carry rights. Ask before sharing someone's voice.

Troubleshooting

If the page cannot fetch the reel, check that it is public, that you copied the reel link and not the account link, and that it still exists. If the player does not start, press Download instead and play the file from your device. If the file is silent, the original reel may have no sound at all, or your device may be on silent.

If an error persists, send us the link through the contact page, with the device and browser you use.

Quick answers

Is the audio an MP3? It is MP3 or M4A, depending on what the platform provides. Both play on any modern device.

Can I get a song without the voice? No. A reel mixes voice and music in one track, and a downloader cannot split them.

Why is there no audio card? The platform may not expose a separate track for that reel. Save the video and extract the sound with free software.

Is it legal to keep the sound? Keeping a copy for private listening is common. Sharing, selling or using music in your own work needs a licence.

Tips for better listening

If you save a lot of sounds, name each file with the song or topic and the date. Create a folder called Sounds and keep everything there, so it is easy to find.

To listen offline on a phone, copy the files into your music app or a files folder that your player scans. On Android, put them in the Music folder. On iPhone, add them to the Files app and open them from there.

Common mistakes to avoid

One mistake is pasting an account link or a link to a sound page when the tool needs the link of a reel. Another is expecting a song without any voice. A reel mixes sound sources into one track, and nothing can pull them apart afterwards. A third mistake is recording the speaker of your phone with another device, which gives poor sound and background noise. Saving the file directly is always better. A fourth is posting saved music in your own videos and then being surprised when the platform mutes it. Music needs a licence for public use. Keep saved audio for private listening unless you have permission.
