How to free up phone storage after saving videos
Saved videos add up quickly. A few dozen Full HD clips can take several gigabytes, and a phone with little space starts to slow down, refuse updates and fail to record. This guide shows how to find what is using your space on iPhone and Android, how to move videos to a computer or to cloud storage, how to shrink files you want to keep, and how to build a habit that keeps your phone light. You will be able to clear gigabytes in minutes without losing anything you care about.

See what is using the space
On iPhone, open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage. It lists apps and shows how much Photos and Files use. On Android, open Settings, then Storage, which breaks space down by type, and look at Videos and Downloads. Start with the biggest item, because that is where the quick win is.
Clear the Downloads folder
Files saved from a browser stay in Downloads until you remove them. Open the Files app, sort by size and delete clips you have already watched or copied elsewhere. Do this first, since it is the folder people forget most.
Move videos to a safe place
Copy the videos you want to keep to a computer with a cable, or to a cloud drive. Check that the copy plays before you delete anything from the phone. For family videos or work, use two places, because one backup can fail.
Make files smaller
If you only watch on a phone, a 720p copy is almost as good as 1080p and takes about half the space. Free video apps and some phone editors can export a smaller version. Use the size calculator on this site to estimate how much space a clip needs at each quality.
Stop the pile from growing
Save only what you will really watch again. Pick a day each month to clear the Downloads folder. Choose HD or SD thoughtfully when a platform offers both, and save big files only on Wi-Fi so you do not waste data on files you may delete.
Keep important things safe
Never delete the only copy of something important. Before a big clean-up, make sure photos and videos you care about exist in a second place and open correctly.
Questions people ask
How much space does a minute of video take? Around 4 to 8 MB at 720p and 8 to 15 MB at 1080p for typical phone video.
Will deleting from Downloads remove it from Photos? No, they are separate copies. Check both places.
Is compressing safe? Yes if you keep the original until you have checked the smaller copy plays well.
Should I use cloud storage? It is a good second place for videos you want to keep, as long as you also have a copy you control.
